Former Kampala Mayor Al Hajji Nasser Ntege Sebbagala, alias Seeya, has endorsed controversial researcher Dr Stella Nyanzi’s candidature for the Kampala Woman MP seat.
Dr Nyanzi, a member of the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), rose to prominence for her writing flair, bold criticism of former boss Mahmood Mamdani of the Makerere Institute for Social Research (Misr).
An activist, Nyanzi recently returned from Luzira Prison where she served 18 months for cyber harassment, Nyanzi has used nudity in most of her protests. But now out jail, Nyanzi seems to be openly buttressing her efforts to find a better platform to help her take her activism a notch higher.
An admirer of opposition strongman Dr Kizza Besigye, she is slowly meeting key contacts in the political sphere, associates on whose experience and support she hopes to ride in her bid to uproot lukewarm FDC member Nabilah Naggayi Ssempala, the Kampala Woman MP.
On Wednesday, Nyanzi met Sebbagala at his home in Munyonyo, a Kampala suburb.
She later described the meeting as “a great honour” that saw her leave with “the blessings of Uganda’s leading kingmaker,” adding that she had found a guide in Seeya as she prepares to officially throw her hat in the ring for Kampala politics.
“I chose to kneel down at his feet to receive his anointing. How empowering! I was deeply touched by his charisma, impressed by his wisdom, and amazed by his vast experience with both local and international politics. I am emboldened by his acceptance to mentor me as I hike the gears of my engagement in the liberation struggle for our country. Praising the veteran politician who won the hearts and minds of Kampalans in ways that no other leader of the capital city ever did, Seeya was teaching me how to compete for votes in Kampala city and win with a great margin, ”wrote Nyanzi, who was in company of her lawyer Isaac Ssemakadde.
